Together we can build strong, clean communities without violence and crime. FOSCI leader, Beverly McClain knows what is like to lose a beloved family member. She lost her son to a violent crime and continues to pray for peace and an end to thousands of needless deaths due to homicide. She has dedicated her life to helping families impacted by homicide. McClain built a Wall of Compassion to remind us to pause and think of the impacts of homicide on our communities in North Florida and throughout the world.
Our hearts belong to our children. No parent wants to mourn their child. It does not matter if the child is 5 or 55, a parent’s or guardian’s heart aches when saying good bye to a child. We want to remember our children and the joy they brought into our lives. We have discovered that most parents find solace seeing their child’s name on the memorial Wall of Compassion after a tragic loss.
In 2007, the FOSCI staff placed each homicide victim’s name on a cross and placed the stakes into the ground. However, we have expanded to over 3,000 names and unfortunately, by the end of the year we will have over 4,000 names listed on the Wall of Compassion.
Every homicide survivor has a story to tell. It is our responsibility to listen. Everyone reacts differently to seeing their beloved child’s name and photo, many gain peace in knowing their child’s life held a purpose and others become very somber as they will never hold their child again. The Wall of Compassion shows their death was not in vain. We would like to turn the tide in Jacksonville, Florida; although, we will never forget our loved ones as shown on more than seven+ custom made Wall of Compassion boards.
Let’s fight for better neighborhoods that are free of violent crimes by taking a better look at the distinctive roles we play in changing the direction for our neighborhoods for the future. Although, we will never forget our loved one’s loss to murder, we want to do all we can to end this vicious homicide cycle. We can only do this with strong involvement in our community to get to the bottom of what hurts us and making a change. FOSCI is here minute by minute working for Jacksonville communities and praying for change.
